Last Friday, the blog Shakespeare’s Sister ran asked readers to suggest their favorite “little” movies. You know, the ones that no one has seen but you. The ones you recommend to your disbelieving friends every time the topic of movies comes up.
Ah, I have so many. If you haven’t seen Gregory’s Girl, you probably didn’t even know there was such a thing as a Scottish high school romantic comedy with a penguin suit, let alone a perfect one. But there is. The equally strange and lovely The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain is about a Welsh village proud of its mountain, until Hugh Grant comes along and tells them it’s really just a hill. Recently, I saw Twin Falls, Idaho, and it was just amazing. At the same time that I was captivated by the allegory, I wondered if it was literally true.
I could go on and on. What are yours?
Blow Dry is my absolute favorite. Alan Rickman is terrific, as are Natasha Richardson & Bill Nighy. Besides, how can I not love a movie that has rainbow colored sheep? Pre-dyed wool!
I’d also recommend Big Eden, in which our protagonist comes back to his home town to find the man of his dreams. Maybe not the guy he thought he was looking for, but, well, you’d have to see for yourself. The pace is a bit slow in spots, but overall it’s charming

Oooh…two I haven’t heard of. JACKPOT!
Since you bring up Bill Forsythe, I’ll refer you to another of his that nobody but me appears to have seen: Housekeeping. It’s a lovely adaptation of a lovely novel, beautiful and funny and wistful and very, very sad.
(Actually it has ties to two of the movies you mention, because it takes place in Idaho.) 😉
Well, fancy that. I didn’t know I was discussing Bill Forsyth. 🙂
He did Gregory’s Girl. I meant to include that in my post, but spaced on it.
Anyway, definitely watch Housekeeping. Also, Ulee’s Gold, which is a completely unrelated movie I thought of this morning.
Speaking of Bill Forsyth, I love both Housekeeping and Gregory’s Girl, and I also suggest his Local Hero.
I saw an interesting movie a few weeks ago called Speak – teen girl angst with a twist, and fascinating movie called Virgin in which a young girl finds herself pregnant and decides she is carrying the child of God. For some reason I’ve been seeing a bunch of teen girl movies lately….. fortunately I’m a Sensitive New Age Guy and I can relate.
Awe rats…. none of my markup worked. 😛
Ken, this site uses real html, not interface markup. You need pointy brackets not square brackets. I’ll fix it for you cuz I’m nice.
