The Art of Invocation

Oberon Zell-Ravenheart invited me to contribute to his forthcoming book, Creating Circles & Ceremonies. He’s looking for contributions of invocations, chants, and other ritual bits. So I wrote up a little something, and since I’m not giving him exclusive rights, I thought i’d share it here.

Invocation to Mother Earth

In The Elements of Ritual I suggest that every invocation should have six components: Specificity, descriptiveness, praise, need, invitation, and greeting. Whenever I write an invocation, I make sure to include each of these. When invoking Mother Earth, I specify Who I am invoking, I describe Her, praise Her, and explain why I need Her to come. I invite her to come, and, acknowledging that my invocation has been successful, I greet Her.

O Earth Mother, come to me now!
O Lady of growing things, O body of the Earth, O source of life
Come to me now!
You Who are green, you Who are brown, you who are red
Come to me now!
By your fields I call you
By your mountains I call you
By your caves I call you
Come to me now!
By your deer and bull I call you
By your oak and elm I call you
By your winter and spring I call you
Come to me now!
Beautiful Lady, perfect Lady, glorious Lady
Without You I cannot be.
Come to me now, that I may praise You!
Come to me now, that I may adore You!
Come to me now, that I may embrace You!
Welcome, Earth Mother.
Blessed be!

If you wish to use this invocation, change “I” to “we” as needed. For specific rites, you could change or add to the “that I may” section, being specific about the ritual. For example, “Come to me now, that I may be healed by you” might be needed.

    Hi Deb.

I have an article about using chant in ritual that describes how my own coven does our circle casting using freeform chant. The article was originally published in the issue 92 (Winter 2004) Circle Magazine.

I can email a copy of the article in MS Word format to you or to Oberon if either of you are interested.
