I’ve been told that some people like to look at pictures of other people’s pets. Okay…I’m nothing if not accommodating.
So here’s Slurm, our pet sourdough starter:
Isn’t it the cutest thing? It’s five or six years old (I lose track of time), which is middle-aged in sourdough starter years.
Slurm can do all kinds of tricks no kitten can do. Do you know any kittens that can leaven bread? I didn’t think so. Can you make pancakes with kittens? Okay, maybe you can. Still.
If it looks sluggish, that’s because it’s fresh off a long nap in the fridge. It usually takes it a while to wake up. Once it does, though, Jody and Slurm will bake some bread together. Yum.
That’s the most adorable starter I’ve seen in a long time. My friendship cake has a hell of a personality, but not much in the way looks….;)
Petblogging…
Like a lot of bloggers (e.g. Bruce Schneier, who does Friday Squid Blogging), my step-sister Deborah blogs about the animals in her life with “Friday Kitten Blogging.” Except for this week when she’s traveling and has left her blog in……
Friendship cake…wow, that brings back memories. My mom had one of those going when I was a teenager, and I had completely forgotten about it. I don’t think I grasped at the time what a cool thing it was.
I was given a sourdough starter a few years ago and loved it dearly. Unfortunately, during a rough patch I neglected it and it died. I felt terrible and would love to have another, one I’ll take care of more attentively. How to get one….any ideas? Can they be made from scratch?
They can–Jody made this one from scratch. The recipe was in one of her baking books, I think (maybe the La Brea bread book; Nancy Silverton uses sourdough starter in everything). I’ll try to track it down and post it.
Good kitty…
Good kitty…
You know, sometimes when Jody forgets to feed Slurm, I swear I can hear it hissing at me when I walk by…
