There was a funny, chemically smell in my bedroom last night. After sniffing everything I finally realized that it was the computer. The too-hot-to-touch computer. That one.
So right now I’m backing up everything to CD. Normally I back up to the second hard drive, on the unassailable logic that they both won’t crash at once. But if the computer explodes that logic won’t actually work.
Oy.
Very good move.
Last summer a friend of mine was working the UK elections (I forget if I’ve ever mentioned this). He advised using at least two remote servers, just in case one blew up. No one took him very seriously…until there were some explosions in a nearby factory and the server blew up. Literally. Fireball and everything.
Oooh, fireball!
(Don’t worry, I’m doing five minutes online and checking the temperature.)
I always said, if a computer has to ruin your life by crashing, the least it could do was provide special effects. When computers on Star Trek crash, there are sparks and smoke. Same ruinous effect on your life, but better visuals.
