Fun With Language: Golden Globes Edition

In watching the Golden Globes on Monday, I was briefly torn over the nomination for Best Actor in a Television Drama. Hugh Laurie and Patrick Dempsey are two of the best actors on TV, and star in my two favorite shows. But Hugh Laurie’s acceptance speech was so delightful and witty that it smoothed all inner conflict.

And all I can say is, I cannot wait until I have the opportunity to compliment someone by telling them

They smell of fresh mown grass.

I do hope I remember to use the British accent when I say “grass.”

Given those nominees, I’d have had to vote for Michael C. Hall…but I’m less than impressed with those nominees (apart from Hall). The Golden Globes have become as crappy as the Emmies, where television is concerned; it’s pretty much guaranteed now that they’ll ignore the best and go for bland mediocrity.

The only awards show I watch is the Oscars, and that’s just in case somebody says or wears something completely outrageous. I usually tape it and scan it the next day. That said I was searching the web for a transcript of Laurie’s acceptance, but haven’t been able to find it.

I’ve never watched the Globes before, but people say they’re more fun than the Oscars, so I thought I’d give it a whirl.

There’s a video of Laurie’s acceptance on the linked Golden Globes page above. I don’t know if it’s the whole thing though (dead speakers).

Those videos are the Q&A after the ceremony, not the acceptance speeches themselves….. But thanks!
