So, the crisis is over

Edwards has done the right thing.

  1. As one of the bloggers at “GetReligion” pointed out, the real losers in the whole Edwards-bloggers flare-up are the Christian liberal Democratic voters.

Edwards, whom I sort of like (but not as much as Bill Richardson), has cast his lot with two campaign bloggers who basically seem to think that *all* Christians are misogynistic child-molesting bigots.

(I used to read Pandagon, but I have stopped.)

I could not disagree more strongly. I read Pandagon and Shakespeare’s Sister daily, they are two of the favorites I check into when I haven’t the time for others. I don’t know Amanda Marcotte personally, but I do know Melissa McEwan (in the Internet version of “know”). Neither of these women is anti-Christian, they are anti-Christian bigot. They are anti the Falwells and Dobsons of the world. So am I.

Plus, neither woman did anything morally or ethically wrong. They didn’t, for example, use a sockpuppet to try to taint a debate, as one of McCain’s chief bloggers did. All they did was express strong opinions in strong language on personal blogs. They didn’t in any way “taint” the Edwards campaign. This was a tempest in a teapot.

Don’t forget the tempest was started by Bill Donohoe, who is anti-Semitic and anti-Pagan as well as a general nutjob. Does saying that make me anti-Christian? I don’t think so, and I don’t have a problem with Amanda or Melissa because what they say is of a similar type.

  3. If you were a Catholic, would you be offended by Marcotte’s writing, ”

Q: What if Mary had taken Plan B after the Lord filled her with his hot, white, sticky Holy Spirit? A: You’d have to justify your misogyny with another ancient mythology.”

We can chuckle, because we’re not Catholics, and perhaps we have an earthier view of the gods. But Catholics on the political left can be offended, and they are no friends of this Donahue guy.

The fact that Marcotte has, I am told, gone back and removed some of her more colorful “strong language” posts is sort of telling too.

Certainly one can say whatever one wants on one’s own blog, but Edwards’ opponents may keep this “tempest” bubbling as an attack on his character.

  4. deblipp says:

Edward’s opponents are keeping this attack going because swiftboating is what the right-wing noise machine does best. They have no substantive attacks to offer, so they do this.

The people who you’ve “heard from” that Amanda removed her posts were wrong. Some of the posts were in the archives all along, some suffered from server problems, and it’s been well-documented, for instance here and here.

Here’s a different view on how the Democratic left feels about this:

Whether one agrees with Marcotte’s and McEwan’s statements or not, whether one is offended or not, is not so much the issue. The issue is whether a hit-piece from a bigoted partisan on low-level employees is going to drive the public discussion — and whether it’s going to do so without context.

Now, check this out about what offends Catholics.

  5. Well, Marcotte is out anyway. Ironically, Pandagon is more readable these days now that it seems to be more of a group blog.

Campaigns should have bloggers, but the Internet makes it so easy to bring up everyone’s baggage.

You won’t find me doing political blogging!

  6. deblipp says:

I like political blogging, when I’m just raving about something I see in the news, or observing the patriarchy at work, but I would never do it professionally.

As of today, Amanda has resigned from the Edwards campaign.

  7. As Kathy Shaidle, but very conservative yet sometimes funny Catholic blogger writes,

“Blogging is supposed to be rude, anarchic and distinctly “unofficial”. Hiring a “campaign blogger” is like hiring a “campaign farter” or setting up a “campaign mosh pit.” “Official” bloggers are to real bloggers what the Monkees are to the Beatles, except that’s unfair to the Monkees, who actually put out some damn fine recordings. Make that “what Jazzercise is to jazz”.”
