The only unanswered one was a movie I knew was obscure, but you all knocked ’em out of the park so fast last week, I was determined to make it a little tougher.
1. The hero visits his boss’s home, which is a stately manor with a butler and an extensive butterfly collection.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Solved by ArthurLB (comment #10—third try’s the charm).
2. They live on a space ship with flowers and vines painted on the walls of the mess.
Serenity
Solved by maurinsky (comment #14).
3. First she lives in a lovely English manor, then a palace, then a tower.
Anne of a Thousand Days
Solved by TehipiteTom (comment #1).
4. The telepaths live in an underground fortress reached through abandoned subway stations.
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Solved by TehipiteTom (comment #1).
5. A mountaintop convent in the Indian Himalayas.
Black Narcissus
Solved by TehipiteTom (comment #2) and Melville one minute later (comment #3).
6. Many of the film’s characters are sleeping on the floor of a New York Chicago apartment that belongs to one of them.
HINT: A lesser known film by a famous and highly-regarded director, made in the 21st Century.
The Company
Unsolved.
Update: I apologize for an unsolvable clue. The Company is set in the Chicago Joffrey, not the New York Joffrey.
7. They live in a town that has the “first mountain in Wales.”
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain
Solved by TehipiteTom (comment #1).
Altman never occurred to me. When I tried to come up with major directors who set their films in New York, all I could think of were Woody Allen (whose New Yorkers aren’t sleeping-on-the-floor types) and Martin Scorsese.
You know, it’s my error. The Company is based in Chicago. My face is red!
I actually would have guessed The Company, which seemed like the obvious answer…except for the Chicago part.
Mea maxima culpa.
So much for impressing Evn. 😉
*sob* Serenity. R.I.P…
