that I’ve been confusing Dermot Mulroney and Dylan McDermott forever. That’s why I never recognize whichever one is in whichever movie I see.
When I saw The Family Stone, I thought, how come I never realized that guy was so handsome? I didn’t think he was all that in Steel Magnolias! Yeah, I thought that.
I don’t find anything the same about them except their stupid names and the fact that they showed up around the same time, which did in fact keep me not knowing or caring which was which for (also, but shorter) ever.
I worked it out about five years ago.
Brains are odd. Dylan McDermott, in that photo, looks a bit like Pierce Brosnan. To me.
Roberta, yeah, it’s the names. I never processed that there were two actors with more or less the same weird name. Plus a sort of bland handsomeness. Handsomer in Mulrooney’s case, blander in McDermott’s.
Konagod, nah, that I’d never mistake. Pierce has that tiny Irish nose, McDermott has a real honker. However, there’s a picture up on the ‘net (a Google image search’ll turn it up on page 1 or 2) of McD. side by side with Clive Owen, and yeah, I can see that as a potential mixup.
I’ve always confused their names too. But do you really think Dermot Mulrooney is more handsome than Dylan McDermott? I find Mulrooney much blander (in looks and as an actor).
Mulrooney has a very old-fashioned, chisel-jawed kind of handsome, kinda Dana Andres. He fills up space. The other one has sort of washed out features, very Randolph Scott I-could-be-anybody.
Dana Andrews is the poster child for ‘blandly good-looking’; Randolph Scott actually has a more distinctive look. So too with Mulrooney and McDermott.
Mc-lessDermott is a bit hansdomer but more bland. McDermott is sparkly (Deb, if you’d ever seen the Practice, you’d get it).
🙂
I confuse them all the time too! The names are just too odd.
Actually, I now see that it was the same Dermott in both The Family Stone and My Best Friend’s Wedding. I found him incredibly bland in MBFW, but super-sexy in Family Stone, so maybe he’s one of those men who age very well.
But Pronoia, I wasn’t confusing them exactly; I actually thought there was only one guy. ::blush::
I think My Best Friend’s Wedding is actually where I formed my impression of Mulrooney as bland (of course, Rupert Everett steals that movie, so, not entirely fair).
Dylan McDermott is lots of fun in Home for the Holidays.
Actually, I don’t think Dylan McDermott was all that in Steel Magnolias. I think he just got more “all that” with age!
How strange – I got confused too with the two – not because of the looks, but the names maybe. I watched all of Flash of Genius and wondered when Dylan was going to make his appearance, when it was actually Mulrooney who was credited.
