I got nothing today. Sorry. Perils of blogging from the office.
But Roberta and Melville are having themselves a jolly ol’ sing-along in yesterday’s movie review comments, and it occurs to me that there are lots of movies with sing-alongs.
So, I will post a clue for a movie with a sing-along, and whoever gets it can post the next clue to a movie with a sing-along, and so on.
My clue: The walls of Jericho are metaphorically trumpeted down at the end.
It Happened One Night. The singalong song is “The Man On the Flying Trapeze.”
Next clue: The singer is reluctant to join in at first, but once he does he sings an unforgettable “Bye Bye Blackbird.”
Jason Robards as Howard Hughes in the terrific Melvin and Howard.
Am I correct sir?
Correct!
The scary bad guy in this film sings a hymn, and then surprisingly is joined in song by a wise, strong woman.
Is it too early to grovel for hints?
Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish in Night of the Hunter.
Next: German nuns learn an African-American spiritual.
Lilies of the Field?
I guess not.
The woman is best known for her work several decades prior to this film. And while the film is critically acclaimed, it’s not well-known beyond serious film-goers, despite its influence on many other films and filmmakers.
I think Melville already got it, but I appreciate the hint! I will hint you back if I got that last one correct.
Lillies of the Field is correct. Go ahead, Evn.
This movie features two sing-alongs, the first of which involves a ménage à trois and the National Anthem.
Aha! That’s Shortbus. I loved that movie.
This is an easy one: A sing-along at Elvis’s grave.
That is Spinal Tap.
This is Spinal Tap.
fug.
Here’s a twofer–two different war movies, same director, closing scenes.
Oh, and sorry Roberta!
Deborah, I knew you’d get that one. Jack and I loved it, too.
I want to say Platoon and Heaven & Earth…
Is it Stanley Kubrick, Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove?
Close, Melville, although now that I think about it Strangelove sort of works too (or is that three)? There’s another Kubrick that ends with a sing-along.
OH! Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket.
Yep, the Mickey Mouse Club theme ending. Your question, Evn.
An aspiring actress is overwhelmed by the sing-along and slips out unnoticed into the hallway, where she meets an aspiring actor.
Looks like we need a hint.
The aspiring actress’ mother makes her sing during her audition, even though she’s trying out for the Drama department. Later, in her Junior year, the actress changes her name and attends a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Fame!
You’re gonna live forever, Roberta! You’re gonna learn how to fly.
The two leads are thrown out of the car after the showtune sing-a-long becomes more than they (well, he) can bear.
Fame was the final straw in getting my ass to Rocky Horror for the first time.
You know, I never actually saw Fame until a couple of months ago. But ironically, I’ve known all the words to “I Sing The Body Electric” for years.
uggggggg Roberta, tip of my tongue….
One of the annoying singers is half of a very famous Rocky Horror related couple.
The Sure Thing – Tim Robbins would be the other half of the couple
Homeless man sings to romance book editor in a Chinese restaurant. Extra points for naming the song.
I think that’s The Fisher King. Maybe?
And is the song “Lydia the Tattooed Lady?”
Can’t wait to find out if it’s right. Got to sign off now or i’ll miss my train. Be back later.
Yes Melville, you are correct!
