Archive for James Bond
People who don’t even know they’re expressing bigotry
I received this email, from a source I’ll be polite and leave unnamed:
We are reprinting your amusing article about James Bond that you had in the NY Times. Would it be fair to identify you thus: “Deborah Lipp, a practicing witch, is the author of the upcoming “Ultimate James Bond Fan Book.””
My response:
Is it normal for you to identify your authors by their religion? If not, I suggest you leave mine out.
Article probably postponed
New York Times contacted me about my article. Apparently, Harriet Miers is more important. Anyway, it turns out I didn’t write an Entertainment piece, I wrote an Op-Ed piece. So what with Miers withdrawing, there may not be room on Saturday for something about James Bond.
I’ll be in Memphis over the weekend so I’ll just wait & see.
Update: Okay, definitely postponed. They’re still interested, but the SCOTUS dance has them distracted.
New York Times, Saturday, Oct. 29
…that’s the expected date of publication for my article on Daniel Craig & the Bond franchise. Just figures I’ll be in Memphis and won’t be able to line my house with copies.
Just dripping with prestige
The New York Times just accepted my submission of an article about Daniel Craig and the Bond franchise.
In case you’re wondering where I found the balls to submit to the Times, I didn’t. They contacted me via my publisher after seeing the press release.
I am so FULL of me right now.
P.S. The entertainment sections of the Times are still prestigious. Judith Miller doesn’t write about movies.
P.P.S. No, I don’t have a date yet. Watch this space.
Keeping an open mind with my teeth gritted
I will rent Layer Cake or Enduring Love ASAP, and until then, I’ll try to keep an open mind about Craig, but I just can’t see that any of the proposed changes, any of the rebooting of the series, necessitated firing Brosnan.
Pierce Brosnan was godly wonderful as 007, and no matter how much Craig confounds us all by being terrific (if he does), he won’t be better than Brosnan. The gratuitous firing of a successful star is something Cubby Broccoli would never have done.
The Press Release
This went to Publisher’s Marketplace for the “Today’s Deals” section:
NON-FICTION: POP CULTURE
Deborah Lipp’s THE ULTIMATE JAMES BOND FAN BOOK, an illustrated compendium of opinions, lists, arguments, discussions, reviews, trivia, facts, and knick-knacks, to Drew Nederpelt at Sterling & Ross, in a nice deal, to coincide with the release of 2006’s CASINO ROYALE (world). drew@sterlingandross.com
So, yay me.
On the bright side…
To coincide with the dark, dismal announcement, my publisher issued a press release about my forthcoming The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book, to, I believe, Publisher’s Weekly Publisher’s Marketplace.
I’ll post details when I have them.
Huzzah.
Daniel Craig? Daniel Frickin CRAIG??
I have been following the news, rumors, gossip, corroborated rumors, bizarre speculation, and fanboy fantasies on the issue of Who Will Be the Next James Bond for months. Months. The producers refused to speak while the mainstream media and Internet went batshit crazy with wild speculation.
