Decision about the blog

1. Sundays will be meditation day.
2. Tuesdays will be film trivia day. All film trivia posted on this site will have some Bond-related component. Somehow. But will be accessible to the non-Bondians among you. But shame on you!
3. I will keep in mind that y’all like feminist rants. After giving it some thought, I realized I couldn’t promise to get all ranty on schedule. I need to be open-ended with it.

Thanks for your input.

Blog changes and polling

Right now, the voting on the blog is:
5 for Feminist Rant
3 for Trivia Quiz
2 for Meditation
1 for Link Roundup.

Now I’m thinking that feminist rant will be the hardest to come up with, but it looks like that’s the direction I’ll go in. I also might add two new features from the above. So keep voting.

I am currently creating a Favorite Posts section. If anyone wants to help me modify my WordPress template so that I can somehow automate it (rather than manually adding each link to the template) or make it easier, I would totally love you. Also, you can vote for favorite posts if you happen to remember them.

What you want is what I want is

So, while we’re voting, consider this: Weekly movie trivia quizzes or James Bond trivia quizzes or mixed-use trivia quizzes.

Just a thought.

Just tell me what you want

Sometimes it’s hard to organize my brain around writing for the blog. What to write, what to write…

But I never have problems on Sunday nights or Thursday nights, because those are the nights I prepare Monday Movie Reviews and Friday Catblogging. Although most days I write more than one post, it is a great relief to know at least one thing I will write. It just…it makes my brain happy.

So I’d like to add a new weekly feature, probably on Thursdays, and I’m talking suggestions. I have a few ideas of my own:

  • Thursday meditation
  • Thursday invocation (all of these will be preceded by the word “Thursday;” I think I’ll stop typing it)
  • Feminist Rant
  • Cool Quotation
  • Link round-up

Please let me know if you like any (or several) of these, or if you have suggestions of your own.

New reviews

I got a couple of new review excerpts up on the Spellbook, and one on Elements of Ritual (which was a surprise for a three-year old book!).

Blogroll updates

Added to the blogroll:

Capitalism Bad; Tree Pretty
I Shame the Matriarchy
Ilyka Damen
Pam’s House Blend

Added to the website list:
Marmaduke Explained

Also, I moved Crooks & Liars from “Websites” to “Blogs” because, well, it’s a blog.

My smartest spammer

There’s a spammer out there who has a porn site. The thing is, he’s got this brilliant spam technique, where he leaves film star comments. His search engine finds references to certain movie stars, and then the spam is a note with an apparently meaningful comment about that star. So when I review a movie with Meryl Streep, I’ll get a remark about how great she was in The Devil Wears Prada.

When I look at my moderated comments folder, I can scroll quickly past most spam, because most of it is full of links, and has no plain text. But this guy’s porn links are only in his name, and his comments seem sensible. If you don’t pay attention, they get through.

…but if you click the name at work, BAM firewall. Tres embarrassing. So I moderate the name.

Happy Blogiversary to Me!

I actually started this blog on January 31, 2005, but was using it entirely as a “What’s New” event/update page. I had a brief sputter of sort of interesting posts in the next few months, not much.

(Seriously, the above-linked posts are the only ones worth revisiting between January 31 and October 10 of 2005.)

So what happened on October 14, 2005, that started me blogging in earnest? Daniel Craig.

You know, I’d like to say that I was inspired by the current political climate, or by an overwhelming urge to reach out to the world, but no, it was James Bond. For some reason, I became a real blogger after that, and within the next six weeks had put up my first political snark, started some movie blogging, had started to tie the personal to the philosophical, and begun posting Fun With Language and feminism.

And now it’s one year later. Please send champagne.

Added to the Blogroll

Some famous and some not-famous blogs I recently decided I wanted to reside in my right-hand column (in alphabetical order):
Creek Running North

Hullabaloo
Medical Reviews of House
Nemeton

UPDATE: All links fixed.

Cutest spam ever

I get a lot of comment spam trying to sneak in as a regular comment, so a lot of it says things like “good site!” and “helpful info, I learned so much” and all this crap. In fact, “good site” is a moderated phrase.

Anyway, a spam comment came up in the moderation queue that just said:

Very good site! I like lesbians!

Me too, Mr. Spam Guy, me too.
